When is the right time to see an orthodontist?

In general, the answer to this question is simple: you should see an orthodontist any time you need to improve the alignment of your teeth or the quality of your bite. Sometimes the need for improvement is obvious, as is the case with severe malocclusions where the misalignment issues are easy to see. However, other times a jaw in need of adjustment can display less noticeable symptoms. If you find that your jaws frequently shift position or makes sounds when you move them, that you're unintentionally biting your teeth or mouth, that you get frequent pain in your jaw joints, or that your do a lot of mouth breathing, it may be time to come in for an examination.

When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?

Orthodontic Problems. For children, the answer to this question is much simpler. In keeping with the American Academy of Orthodontists (AAO), we ask that parents bring their child in for an initial evaluation by age seven. While we may not begin treatment at this age, starting early is critical to laying the foundation for a healthy, beautiful smile.

At this age the back bite has fully developed, which lets your orthodontist evaluate all of your child's tooth and jaw relationships. Evaluating early allows your orthodontist to catch problems before they get too serious and plan optimum treatment accordingly. Additionally, starting early can help your orthodontist more effectively treat certain conditions. For example, a device called a palatal expander can be used to widen the upper jaw of a child's mouth and make more room for teeth (which can be impossible to do once the jaws fully develop). This can help avoid costly, invasive treatments like oral surgery later on.

Your orthodontist can also use early orthodontic treatment to treat early or late loss of baby teeth, tongue thrusting, mouth breathing, or persistent thumb sucking before these problems grow into other issues. Though it's important to remember that for most children we won't start treatment right away. More often than not your orthodontist will simply monitor your child’s growth until the optimal time to begin treatment occurs, which is usually when your child is between nine and fourteen years old.
